Whitewater rafting is an extreme sport. The sport requires lots of techniques for different levels of difficulty. I have here a list of techniques and terms that will be used on the sport. This may help beginners to understand the sports if you plan to enroll for whitewater rafting lessons.
Punching is a rafting term that pertains to the rafting crew as they paddle the raft to place it on enough speed that gets them through the hydraulics without getting stopped. Punching therefore means they have to punch through the hydraulics.
High siding is a term used as the rafters fight the hydraulics to avoid flipping. In this technique they climb to the raft’s side that is being lifted in the air. This is to keep the raft at level with the water and not get flipped over.
Dump truck is a state wherein the raft get some of its passengers or all of them thrown on the water, but it still remains on an upright position. This happens a lot in whitewater rafting. Rafts are stable because of its huge size and low mass at the center.
Right over left or left over right is a term used to describe the flipping over of a raft. Depending on which side it rises then flips over. When the right tube goes up over the left tube then the raft is then said to have flipped right over left. Then if the rafts left tube rise over to flip on the right side tube, then the raft has flipped left over right.
Taco is also another rafting term that usually happened is the raft lack air or under inflated. This is an instance wherein the middle of the raft suddenly buckles having the front of the raft to touch or about to touch the raft’s back part. This then happened in hydraulics surfing.
Flip line is a rafting technique used as to where the guide will get a webbing loop with binder then attaches it on the raft’s perimeter line , stands on top of the raft that is upside-down now they will lean to a side opposite from the flip line while holding the line and the re rights the raft.
Knee flipping is somehow involving a small raft that can be flipped over using the rafters’ knees. The rafters will have to hold the webbing down the raft’s underside and use their knees to push the outer tube, lifts their body out of the water and lean back to have the raft to overturn.
Once you know exactly what these words mean, then you won’t have a hard time understanding the whitewater rafting sport terms and techniques.
